1. The cost of spiral perms vary by where you get it done. If you are looking to spend a little less money, you can always go to a cosmetology school.
2. As far as I know (i'm half way through school now), the different rollers vary just by the thickness (each thickness is a different color)
3. They hurt simply because you have any where from 50 to over 100 perm rods in your hair. They get very heavy. Also, if the band on the rod is twisted a lot to make it tighter, it may pull hair and that would hurt as well.
