Dear George,
I'm going to cut my hair next week, I was thinking about angles,
and a shorter cut... I just don't want it to poof out; what
is the best way to achieve a sleek-non-puffy look, and what
cut would you suggest?

Jennifer, thank you for sharing your hair concern with me.
By its very nature curly wants to be full (puffy), and will
look frizzy in damp and humid weather. For styling this type
of hair you have several options:
If you want a look that is easy to wear and almost styles
itself start with a contoured-shaped that is layered to fit
the size of the head and shape of the face. To compliment
the natural curl and natural growth pattern, the top is cut
shorter (with or without bangs) while the sides are angled
to frame the face. The back can be either short and tapered
to hug the neck, left long to wear down, or pulled up off
the neck. To control the puffy look, some selective thinning
may be required along with a styling aid for frizz (humidity
control). This type of style-cut holds it's shape as it grows
and looks good even when you don't have the time to style
it. Be aware that style-cuts like these can take several shapings
to find the very best length.
The other option is to have it cut all one length with sides
angled to fram the face (with or without bangs). Again, use
selective thinning to control the puffy look. This type of
style cut requires more care if you want a smooth, sleek,
straight look. To get the look use a straightening balm or
spray with a hair dryer and flat iron to temporarily relax
the curl.
