09/31/04 - Can my hairstyle make me thinner?

Dear George,

I have been told that my long thin straight hair makes me look larger of figure. I don't like to take a long time doing my hair each day so a high matinence style is not for me. My hair is very fine and slips when curled and flies all over when left down. I don't have bangs right now so the result of very long straight hair without bangs is very flat and boring. I do like the length but I am willing to give a bit of it up if I can achieve a better looking, easily manageble style.

Thank you for sharing your hair concern with me.

For a new look that almost styles itself and balances your full figure, I recommend you have the sides and top cut shorter and leave length through the back. To this basic shape add a soft but firm "body wave" permanent; not a tight curl. With the top and sides shorter, the wave will lift the hair off the scalp for a fuller thicker look, reduce any oilyness, and give you more styling options.

With this type of shaping and additional wavy effect, it can look great pulled up in back or down to frame your face and balance your full figure. A good example of this type of look is Catherine Zeta Jones new hair style.

Your Friend and Guide,
George Caroll
