Prepare Your Hair for Summer

What is Panthenol?
(Pro Vitamin B-5)

Save Shine Seal (copyrighted article)
by Robert Gooding
A lot of damage is caused by summer sun and fun. Salt water and chlorine
have a nasty effect on color treated hair, heat also plays a major part in
oxidizing and bleaching the hair shaft. In order to reverse these traumatic
effects, we must first start with removing the salt and chemicals. This is done by detoxing. In the salon we provide an Aloe Vera treatment that will do this. At home you can use various products made just for this reason. An example would be Aveda Clarifier. Once the debris is removed, the color must be corrected. This work should be done by an experienced professional.

     For Blondes:
Robert suggests the problem is quite universal. She says, "I'm way too light." This is rectified by low lighting. The process entails gently waving in one's own natural color through her overly blonde hair, not only softening the clients' hair color, but her complexion as well.

     For Brunettes:
Robert explains the problem is also quite common. She says, "I'm too red." This is the combination of heat and salt. This problem is controlled by using an ash base semi-permanent color. The application of this product will fill the hair with anti-red pigment without using peroxide. By using peroxide, we would add to the oxidation process, therefore opening the hair cuticle and causing further future problems.

     For Redheads:
Robert recalls the problem being constant and reoccurring every year. She says, "I'm too faded out." In this case, both permanent and semi-permanent color are needed. Hair color with peroxide is used first to open the cuticle and deposit red deep into the shaft, unlike a brunette who is battling the red. Secondly, the hair is coated with a semi-permanent red color to provide double protection against reoccurring fade-outs.

All of the above should then be finished with a colorless gloss to save, shine and seal our perfect result. After the gloss the hair will feel conditioned, healthy and without frizz.

What is Panthenol?
by Michael Trobee

Ever see a Pantene™ commercial? "...enriched with "pro vitamin B-5"...." This is panthenol. It is chemically a precursor of pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5.) It is one of the more expensive ingredients in cosmetic products. When working for Nexxus® Products Company for 8+ years, I taught many chemistry classes for salons. Back in the 1980's much was not understood about panthenol. The benefits claims ranged from thickening the hair shaft about 3% to 8% in diameter to creating a beautiful shine.

What most companies that use panthenol don't tell you that a "highly enriched" formula of a hair care product contains approximately 0.05% to 0.10% (not 5%-10% but 1/10th of one percent) panthenol. That is maybe a drop or two in an 8oz. bottle. Panthenol does go a long way however. Salonweb.com is toying around with the idea of introducing a 1% to 5% panthenol formula (probably the highest content in the industry). If you think you may be interested in a product like this please email Mike at mike@salonweb.com. Be prepared, it will not be cheap. The retail price of straight panthenol (100%) in a 6oz.- 8oz, size is $64.00 to $100.00. Panthenol works but higher concentrations are not cheap!
